Reliable vascular access is essential for patients undergoing long-term haemodialysis. The department provides comprehensive dialysis vascular access services, from creation and evaluation to maintenance and intervention for dysfunctional access.

Arteriovenous (AV) fistula creation may include radiocephalic, brachiocephalic and basilic vein transposition fistulas depending on the patient's vascular anatomy and dialysis requirements. A fistulogram may be performed to assess blood flow and identify narrowing, obstruction or other abnormalities affecting the function of the fistula.

When stenosis is detected, minimally invasive balloon angioplasty of the AV fistula may be used to restore adequate blood flow and preserve dialysis access. Cuffed tunnelled Permcath insertion is also available for patients requiring reliable long-term haemodialysis access when an AV fistula is unavailable or not yet ready for use.
