Developmental Delay and Intellectual Disability

Children may experience delays in speech, movement, learning, communication, behaviour or social development. Early identification can help children access appropriate therapies and developmental support during important stages of brain development.

Evaluation may include developmental screening, neurological examination, hearing and vision assessment, MRI, EEG, genetic testing and metabolic investigations. The paediatric neurologist also evaluates for epilepsy, cerebral palsy, neuromuscular disorders, autism and other underlying neurological conditions.

Following assessment, families receive an individualised intervention plan that may include physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, behavioural therapy, special education support and developmental follow-up.
