An atrial septal defect (ASD) is an opening between the upper chambers of the heart that may cause abnormal blood flow and increased strain on the heart over time.

For carefully selected patients, the defect can be closed using a catheter-based device without the need for open-heart surgery. Guided by advanced imaging, a specially designed closure device is delivered through a catheter and positioned across the defect, where it permanently seals the opening.

Compared with surgical repair, device closure generally offers shorter hospital stays, quicker recovery and minimal scarring.
