Indwelling Pleural Catheter – IPC

An Indwelling Pleural Catheter (IPC) is a small tunnelled catheter placed into the pleural space to provide ongoing drainage for selected patients with recurrent pleural effusion.

It can be particularly useful when pleural fluid repeatedly accumulates and causes breathlessness. After appropriate training and clinical assessment, drainage can often be performed periodically outside the hospital, helping reduce the need for repeated pleural aspirations or admissions.
