Intra-Aortic Balloon Pump (IABP) Insertion Temporary Mechanical Support for Critically Ill Cardiac Patients

An Intra-Aortic Balloon Pump (IABP) is a temporary mechanical circulatory support device used in patients with severe heart dysfunction or cardiogenic shock. A balloon catheter is positioned within the aorta and inflates and deflates in synchrony with the heartbeat, improving blood flow to the heart muscle while reducing the heart's workload.

IABP support may be used in patients experiencing severe heart attacks, complications following cardiac procedures or other conditions causing significant impairment of heart function. It serves as a bridge to recovery or definitive treatment while stabilising the patient's circulation.
