These tests provide complementary information about airflow obstruction, lung volumes, gas transfer and functional exercise capacity and are routinely used in modern respiratory assessment.

PFTs may be recommended for patients with unexplained breathlessness, chronic cough, asthma, COPD, interstitial lung disease or abnormal imaging and may also be used for disease monitoring and pre-operative respiratory assessment.
