A renal biopsy or kidney biopsy is an important diagnostic procedure used to identify the precise cause and severity of many kidney diseases. The department performs image-guided percutaneous renal biopsy using real-time ultrasound or CT guidance to accurately obtain a small sample of kidney tissue for histopathological examination.

Renal biopsy may be recommended for patients with unexplained kidney dysfunction, significant proteinuria, haematuria or suspected glomerular and tubulointerstitial diseases. It is particularly useful in diagnosing conditions such as glomerulonephritis and tubulointerstitial nephritis and in evaluating renal allograft dysfunction following kidney transplantation.
