ROP Screening for Premature Babies in Kochi

Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP) is an eye condition that can occur in premature and very low birth weight babies because the blood vessels of the retina are still developing.

Premature infants who meet screening criteria require timely eye examinations so retinal changes can be identified before they progress. Preterm and low-birth-weight babies have an increased risk of ROP, making appropriate ophthalmic screening an important component of neonatal follow-up. ROP Screening

The retina is examined at appropriate intervals according to the baby's gestational age, birth weight and clinical risk factors. Some babies require repeated examinations until retinal vascular development is complete or the risk of significant ROP has passed.

ROP Laser Treatment

If treatment-requiring ROP is detected, laser treatment may be recommended for selected babies. The objective is to control abnormal retinal blood vessel growth and reduce the risk of progression that could threaten vision.

Continued ophthalmic follow-up may be recommended even after the acute neonatal period.
