Robotic-Assisted Cardiac Surgery

The da Vinci Xi Robotic Surgical System enables cardiac surgeons to work within the chest using highly flexible robotic instruments introduced through small intercostal ports. Every movement of the robotic instruments is directly controlled by the surgeon; the system does not perform any part of the operation independently.

High-definition three-dimensional magnification provides detailed visualisation of delicate cardiac structures, while wristed robotic instruments offer a greater range of movement than conventional long thoracoscopic instruments. Tremor filtration and motion scaling can further support precise dissection, suturing and reconstruction during appropriately selected cardiac procedures.

These capabilities make robotic-assisted cardiac surgery particularly useful when surgical precision is required within a limited operating space.

Avoidance of Sternotomy in Selected Procedures

One of the major advantages of robotic cardiac surgery is the ability to access the heart through small incisions between the ribs rather than routinely dividing the breastbone. Avoiding sternotomy means there is no conventional sternal bone incision or sternal wiring in procedures that can be completed entirely through a robotic minimally invasive approach. This may provide greater comfort during recovery and eliminate the period of sternal bone healing associated with conventional open-heart surgery.

Smaller Incisions and Reduced Scarring

Instead of a long incision along the centre of the chest, robotic-assisted cardiac procedures are performed through several small access points positioned between the ribs. This results in considerably smaller scars and can provide an important cosmetic advantage for suitable patients.

Less Post-Operative Pain

By avoiding extensive opening of the chest and reducing disruption of the chest wall, robotic-assisted surgery may result in less post-operative discomfort for appropriately selected patients. Pain levels vary according to the individual patient, procedure and clinical condition.

Reduced Blood Loss

The enhanced magnification and precise instrument control of the da Vinci Xi platform can support meticulous surgical dissection and haemostasis. Selected minimally invasive cardiac procedures may therefore be associated with reduced blood loss and a lower likelihood of transfusion compared with conventional open surgery, although transfusion requirements depend on the individual operation and patient's condition.

Potentially Shorter ICU and Hospital Stay

Patients undergoing uncomplicated minimally invasive robotic cardiac surgery may experience a shorter period of intensive monitoring and hospitalisation compared with some conventional open-heart procedures. Length of stay is determined by the type of surgery, cardiac function, associated medical conditions and post-operative recovery.

Faster Return to Routine Activities

Because the breastbone does not require healing after procedures performed without sternotomy, suitable patients may be able to resume routine activities earlier than after conventional open-heart surgery. Recovery timelines vary, but many patients can progressively return to normal activities over the weeks following robotic surgery. The cardiac surgical team provides individual guidance regarding driving, work, exercise and physical activity.
