Robotic hemithyroidectomy, also known as robotic thyroid lobectomy, involves removing one lobe of the thyroid gland while preserving the remaining healthy thyroid tissue. It may be considered for selected thyroid nodules, unilateral goitre, indeterminate thyroid lesions and certain early-stage thyroid cancers.

Using robotic-assisted technology, surgeons can perform precise dissection and removal of the affected thyroid lobe through a remote-access approach. The magnified operative view helps identify the recurrent laryngeal nerve, parathyroid glands and surrounding tissues during surgery.

Preserving the unaffected thyroid lobe may allow some patients to maintain adequate natural thyroid hormone production, although the need for thyroid hormone supplementation is determined through post-operative thyroid function testing.
