Tic Disorders and Tourette Syndrome

Tics are sudden, repetitive movements or sounds that a child may find difficult to control. Examples include blinking, facial movements, shoulder movements, throat clearing or repeated vocal sounds. Tourette syndrome involves multiple motor tics and at least one vocal tic occurring over an extended period. Evaluation helps identify the type and severity of tics and associated conditions such as ADHD, anxiety, obsessive-compulsive symptoms and learning difficulties. Treatment may include education, behavioural therapy, school support and medication when tics significantly affect daily life.
