Robotic surgery and laparoscopic surgery are both minimally invasive techniques using small incisions. However, robotic surgery uses the Da Vinci Xi system, which provides: 3D high-definition vision at 10x magnification (vs. 2D laparoscopy), wristed instruments with 7 degrees of freedom (vs. straight laparoscopic instruments), tremor filtration for rock-steady precision, and a more ergonomic surgical position that reduces surgeon fatigue in long operations.

The Da Vinci Xi is the fourth and most advanced generation of the Da Vinci Robotic Surgical System, manufactured by Intuitive Surgical (USA). It features four fully-articulated robotic arms, an integrated 3D HD vision system, and specialised instruments for soft tissue surgery. It is the same system used at leading cancer centres globally including MD Anderson and Memorial Sloan Kettering.

A surgeon is always in complete control. The Da Vinci Xi is not an autonomous robot — it does exactly what the surgeon commands, with no autonomous movement whatsoever. The surgeon sits at a console and moves controls that are translated in real time into robotic arm movements. The robot adds precision, tremor filtration, and 3D vision — but every decision is made by the surgeon.

Robotic surgery typically offers: significantly less post-operative pain, minimal blood loss and reduced transfusion requirement, shorter hospital stay (often 1–3 days vs. 5–10 days for open), faster return to normal activities and work, lower risk of wound infection and hernia, smaller and cosmetically superior scars, and equivalent or better long-term surgical outcomes for most conditions.

Procedure duration varies by type. A robotic hysterectomy or hernia repair may take 1.5–2.5 hours. A robotic prostatectomy typically takes 2–3.5 hours. Complex procedures like robotic Whipple or radical cystectomy may take 4–7 hours. Your surgeon will give a precise estimate during pre-operative consultation.

Robotic surgery can be performed across a wide age range, including elderly patients (70–80s) and select paediatric cases. Patient selection is made on an individual basis, balancing the benefits against any medical comorbidities.

The cost of robotic surgery varies depending on the procedure, duration, and complexity. Robotic surgery carries a higher upfront cost reflecting the technology and specialised training involved. However, when total cost is considered — including shorter hospital stay, faster return to work, and fewer complications — robotic surgery is cost-competitive. Apollo Adlux provides transparent pre-operative cost estimates with insurance facilitation.

Most major health insurance providers in India — including Star Health, ICICI Lombard, HDFC Ergo, United India, National Insurance, and New India Assurance — cover robotic surgery for medically indicated procedures. Our insurance team will assist in verifying your coverage and obtaining pre-authorisation. CGHS and ESI coverage is procedure-specific.

Pre-operative preparation includes: relevant blood tests and imaging as advised, cessation of certain medications as directed, fasting from the night before surgery, and a pre-anaesthesia assessment. You will receive a detailed pre-operative instruction sheet from our nursing team. Most patients are admitted on the morning of surgery.

Robotic surgery carries the same general surgical risks as any procedure under anaesthesia. Robotic-specific considerations include rare instrument malfunctions and the theoretical risk of conversion to open surgery if an unexpected finding requires it. Conversion is not a failure — it is the right decision for patient safety and is planned for in every robotic case. Your team will discuss all risks during your consent process.

Apollo Adlux Hospital has a dedicated International and Outstation Patient Services team to coordinate all aspects of your visit — from pre-operative investigations and visa assistance to hospital transfers, accommodation, and post-discharge follow-up via telemedicine. Many of our robotic surgery patients travel from the GCC, UK, USA, and other Indian states.

For most robotic procedures, flying is permitted 1–2 weeks after surgery, subject to your surgeon's assessment. For longer flights (over 4 hours), DVT prophylaxis is recommended. Your discharge summary will include specific travel guidance, and our team is available for telemedicine follow-up to clear you for travel.
