Unlike kidney failure, there is no long-term mechanical substitute for a failed liver, making transplant the only definitive treatment.

Yes. This is called a Living Donor Liver Transplant (LDLT). The donor — typically a first-degree relative aged 18–55 with compatible blood group — undergoes evaluation and, if suitable, donates a portion of their liver (usually the right lobe for adult recipients). Both the donor and recipient livers regenerate to near-normal size within 6–8 weeks, thanks to the liver's extraordinary regenerative capacity.

Like all major surgery, liver transplant carries risks including bleeding, infection, bile leak, and vascular complications. Specific to transplant is the risk of rejection, which is managed with lifelong immunosuppressant medication.
