Restoring Life, Rebuilding Hope
The liver is one of the body's most vital organs, playing essential roles in metabolism, digestion, detoxification, immunity and the production of proteins required for normal body function. When severe liver disease progresses to end-stage liver disease or acute liver failure, liver transplantation may become a life-saving treatment option for appropriately selected patients.
The Department of Liver Transplantation at Apollo Adlux Hospital, Kochi, provides comprehensive and multidisciplinary care for adults and children with advanced liver disease. The programme brings together liver transplant surgeons, hepatobiliary surgeons, transplant hepatologists, anaesthesiologists, intensivists, infectious disease specialists, radiologists, gastroenterologists, paediatric specialists, dietitians, physiotherapists and transplant coordinators to support patients throughout their transplant journey.
Our liver transplant programme provides evaluation and treatment for patients with end-stage chronic liver disease, acute liver failure, selected liver cancers including hepatocellular carcinoma and other complex hepatobiliary conditions where liver transplantation may be clinically indicated. From initial transplant assessment and donor evaluation to surgery, dedicated intensive care, immunosuppression management, infection prevention, rehabilitation and lifelong follow-up, patients receive coordinated care within the Centre of Excellence in Multi-Organ Transplantation at Apollo Adlux Hospital.
Liver transplantation involves replacing a severely diseased or failing liver with a healthy donor liver or a suitable portion of a donor liver. Donor organs may be obtained from either living donors or deceased donors, depending on the patient's clinical requirements, donor suitability and applicable organ transplantation regulations. Each patient undergoes detailed evaluation to determine the severity of liver disease, suitability for transplantation and potential risks associated with surgery. The assessment may involve liver function testing, advanced imaging, cardiovascular and pulmonary evaluation, infection screening, nutritional assessment and multidisciplinary specialist consultations.
Apollo Adlux Hospital's liver transplant programme is supported by dedicated Twin Transplant Theatres, advanced surgical infrastructure, specialised Transplant Intensive Care facilities, 24/7 intensivist support, sophisticated diagnostic technology and comprehensive rehabilitation services.
