Intracranial Pressure Monitoring

The brain is enclosed within the rigid skull along with blood and cerebrospinal fluid. An increase in the volume of any of these components may raise the pressure inside the skull. What Is Intracranial Pressure Monitoring?

ICP monitoring is a method used to continuously or intermittently measure pressure inside the skull. In critically ill patients, a small pressure-sensing device may be placed through the skull into or near the brain. The device sends pressure readings to a bedside monitor. This information allows the neurocritical care team to:

  •            Observe changes in brain pressure
  •            Identify sudden increases in ICP

Types of Intracranial Pressure Monitoring

Intraventricular Catheter

A catheter may be placed inside one of the brain’s ventricles.

It can:

  •           Measure intracranial pressure

  •           Allow sampling in selected situations

Intraparenchymal Monitor

A small sensor may be inserted directly into brain tissue to provide pressure readings.

How Is the Procedure Performed?

  4.         Placing the monitoring catheter or sensor
  5.         Connecting the device to a bedside monitor
  6.         Securing the device and applying a sterile dressing
